This ain’t your regular romantic comedy..
June 19th, 2005 by andileftSo mates, it’s movie review time!!
I actually watched this last week. Just haven’t found the time to update my blog yet.
So, what movie am I yappin’ about? Nothin’ other than "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", starring a pair of sexy action hero-heroine, Brad "Achilles" Pitt and Angelina "Croft" Jolie.. hehehe..
The movie starts unexpectedly reminiscent of "Story of Us", with an interview-like shot of the pair with an off-the-screen marriage counselor. But 3 minutes in, and you’ll see that it’s not your regular romantic comedy movie. (Well, maybe more than 3 minutes, since I’m late for about 5 minutes into the theater..
)
Brad Pitt plays John Smith, a professional assassin, while Angelina Jolie plays Jane Smith, same profession. The twist is, they’re married to each other and never told their spouse what they do for a living. He told her he’s a construction worker, she told him she’s a computer consultant. Provided you’re prepared to make the logic-leap that a married couple living together for 5 years (6 years according to her) and not now that their spouse kills people for a living, it’s quite an interesting premise.
Marriage life starts to get boring for them after the 5 (or 6) years together. Then comes another twist.. hubbie and wife both got an assignment to whack the same person. They ended up trying to kill each other, all the while cursing themselves over how stupid they’ve been over the 5 (or 6) years, but as a side effect, reminding them what it was that got them attracted to each other.
Well, that’s the storyline in a nutshell (or in 2 paragraphs, to be exact). The movie was directed by Doug Lyman of Bourne Identity fame, and it sure shows in the action scenes. Mr. Lyman’s got a good grab on what makes a good action scene, all right. As for the actors, they went thru their paces quite well, although rather stilted at times (especially Jolie), but it’s probably due to the somewhat clumsy script. I found the movie a bit lacking in the "moral of the story" department. After all, it’s about 2 assassins who’s got no regard for human life, and by the time the end credit rolls, I suspect they have about 100 or so people killed between them. Granted, the people they killed were other assassins, but still..
So, if you’re looking for an action-romance-black comedy summer blockbuster movie with beautiful people in it, go no further. Just remember to turn off half your brain during the movie to suspend disbelief. :p
Coming soon.. my 2 cents on Dreamworks’ latest animated..
